Fuengirola is probably most famous for its five miles of sandy beaches. A recent landscaping drive by the local municipality has resulted in a wider promenade and plenty of palm trees, interspersed with colourful flower beds and additional seating. The beaches known as Boliches - Gaviotas and Torreblanca hold a European blue flag. Follow the shopping baskets on Tuesdays and you will find yourself at the largest and liveliest street market on the coast. There is also a Saturday boot sale here with the predictably intriguing selection of items on sale.
"La Cala" as this charming village is affectionately known to local residents is only a short distance away. The long beaches are well cared for, clean and soft golden sand. Whilst La Cala has maintained a level of the real Spain it has also taken on, in a small way, something of an international flavour. You will find many amenities together with a vast selection of restaurants here. There are an abundance of good quality sports and recreation facilities both in and around La Cala de Mijas. The tennis club "Club del Sol" welcomes all comers as does the Lawn bowls centre at Miraflores. There are gymnasiums, dive centres and virtually every outdoor activity within minutes of the village.
The only race course of the Costa del Sol, The Hipodromo is midway between Fuengirola and La Cala. Consisting of two tracks with floodlighting for night racing and a grandstand accommodating 5000 spectators. In addition, there is trackside seating for a further 500. Prize money is high and racing runs from October ? May. The riding school offers lessons for beginners and budding jockeys.
