PLACES OF INTEREST
Murcia - Just over an hours drive takes you to Murcia, the regional capital and university city on the river Segura, this colourful city was founded by the Moors in 825AD. The importance of the city can be seen in the many beautiful cathedrals, palaces and other public buildings around its narrow streets. Shops include El Corte Ingles, a 6 storey department store, restaurants and a lively nightlife, especially during fiestas and carnivals.
Cartagena - Head south for about 30 kms and you will come to Cartagena, the Region"s most famous port. It is a place of both cultural and historical importance. One of Spain"s oldest cities, a mix of civilisations have superseded one another. There are plenty of archaeological sites and museums, such as Municipal Archaeological Museum, National Museum of Maritime Archaeology and Roman Theatre. In the heart of the city is a modern shopping area, which spills down past the tapas bars to the recently modernised harbour. Here you will find a submarine on display, built in 1884 by Issac Peral, a local man. The best view of the port is from Parque Torres, in the far distance are the lighthouses and traces of old fortifications that defended the entrance to the port for centuries. The salt flats have been present in this are since the 14th Century and the two windmills that are standing were used for years to bring water from the Mar Menor to the storage lakes. Other birds to be seen in this area are grebes, plovers, herons, egrets, sorks, owls, turns and gulls, to name but a few.
Lo Pagan - Just South of San Pedro del Pinatar is Lo Pagan. Here you can witness the tradition of mud baths, taken in the pools of the Salinas, which are thought to have therapeutic properties. The health benefits include easing of rheumatic pain, arthritis, and healing of skin conditions. A fish market is held on the Esplanade every morning except Sunday.
Santiago de la Ribera - The beach of Santiago de la Ribera is flanked by tall palm trees along its 3 kilometres of marine esplanade. There are beautiful old mansions dating from the beginning of the 20th century.
La Manga Club - Just 20 minutes drive back to the mainland, turn off at Los Belones, and you"ll find the world famous La Manga Club. It has 3 championship golf courses, 28 tennis courts, football academy and other leisure activities.
